The old manor Corfu holiday house Archontiko Kourkolos is situated on the north-western edge of the 12th century mountain village of Makrades, on the southern foothills of the bay of Agios Georgios Pagon (Pagi). The spacious Corfu Villa Archontiko Kourkolos has 3 bedrooms for up to 6 persons, 2 bathrooms, a large living/dining area with open kitchen and a big courtyard with barbecue area. The high-end equipment includes a dishwasher, a washing machine, a flat screen TV (SAT-TV with German channels), broadband internet (WLAN) and air conditioning. This object is especially suitable for hikers.
Makrades is a mountain village, probably founded in the 12th century, situated in the northwest of the island of Corfu, 310 metres above sea level on the mountain road between the coastal towns of Paleokastritsa and Agios Georgios-Pagi. The coastal strip between the two towns is characterised by a steep cliff, which is why the Angelokastro Castle (1.6 km away) was built here in the 12th century in the immediate vicinity. The views that one can enjoy of this part of Corfu are magnificent. Makrades is here with the neighbouring village Krini (0.6 km away) embedded in the green hills of olive groves, fields, cypresses and the wild macchia, from which white and grey limestone cliffs protrude.
Just a few years ago Makrades was a mountain village, with a clear agricultural character, a collection of farms lined up one after the other with a confusing system of paths; narrow streets with Venetian flair. Each family had its donkey, almost each house was inhabited and lived from the yields, which brought predominantly the cultivation of olives and the oil won from it. Thirty years ago, whole fleets of donkeys were still walking through the middle of the village, down the steep mountain path at "Prokima", into the olive groves as far as Agios Georgios. This daily hike was often accompanied by goats or sheep grazing in the fields during the day. The neighbours greeted each other briefly and told each other which groves they were going to work in today. With many different names the individual areas of the mountain massif around the cliffs between Paleokastritsa and Ag. Georgios had different names: Rodafi, Skali, Savou, Hourgos, Monaso, Achiona, Pentavgusto, to name a few examples. Hundreds of such small areas, always with a mixture of olive trees, cypresses, vineyards and fields for agriculture, especially vegetables, shaped the area and landscape around Makrades and made it unique because of its location.
Today it is quieter in the village. Olive growing has changed, donkeys have served their time and are kept only for the love of nature. The people live from tourism and all branches related to it. Olive trees are still harvested, mostly for the own oil consumption, only few remaining work in the fields for the export. Here and there a rooster crows and guards its hens. A few family farms have preserved such traditions. Makrades thinks it is in a fairy tale sleep. A small dreamlike village, with old houses, some dilapidated, some inhabited, some lavishly and luxuriously renovated for a new use: tourism. No package tourism. Here you live in the middle, among the people who live here all year round. Friendly people, always ready for a conversation starting with the question, "Apo pou eisai? Where do you come from?
A new tourism that is not only interested in the beaches, but also in the surroundings, the people and the (everyday) culture. Tourists who are very welcome as guests in Makrades and feel comfortable there. Makrades has a lot to offer. Some excursion destinations are in the immediate vicinity and are even easily accessible on foot. The fortress ruin "Angelokastro from the 12th century, the viewpoints Bella Vista (1.6 km away) with view over Paleokastritsa (9.0 km/20 minutes by car) up to the city Kerkyra (35 km away). Further the viewpoints "Prokima" at Makrades (1.2 km) or "Chelidoni" at Vistonas (2.8 km) with view on the whole north of the island and the bay of Agios Georgios (9.0 km/20 minutes by car or approx. 4.0 km hiking trail/45 min on foot). Wonderful views not only during the day, especially when the sun "falls" into the sea in the evening.
Small ancient paths run through the whole mountain region. "Roman paths", stone paved paths that go through the olive groves and cross with new (mostly unpaved) roads of today, invite you to ideal hikes. Nature can be explored undisturbed, making different offers at every time of the year. Seas of flowers in spring, first ripe fruits in early summer, the loud chirping of the cicadas in midsummer, the mild climate in autumn with ripe grapes and nuts.
In Makrades there are two smaller shopping possibilities: Café Veatriki with a small mini-market and a post office is located on the small village square, and about 50 metres from the Café down the village street the small mini-market of Despotis. Bread can also be ordered daily from the café. A bakery (with a great selection of rolls/croissants and breads) a butcher, hairdresser and other mini markets and cafés are located in the village of Lakones (2.5 km away).
Souvenirs are offered at several points along the main road from Paleokastritsa to Makrades. However, the tourist centre is located at the crossroads at the end of Makrades, where the roads to Krini, Lakones and Vistonas (ring road) meet. Here you will find a large selection of souvenirs, olive woodwork and other handicrafts, textiles, oils and spirits in several shops.
In the holiday season between May and November there are some interesting culinary places nearby. On the footpath towards Agios Georgios Pagon (Pagi) you will find the tavern Fishermans Cabin and the tavern Akrogiali directly on the coast. The tavern Colombo's in Makrades with corfiotische kitchen is only approx. 250 m away, at the crossing to the neighbouring village Krini in the souvenir center. The tavern Sunset in Krini as well as the restaurants Bellavista, Golden Fox and Veranda in Bella Vista (fantastic view) are within walking distance. Also recommendable is the Dolce, between Bella Vista and Lakones, an ice-cream café with a large selection of cakes in a fantastic location. In Lakones the restaurant Boulis and the cafés in the centre of the village are recommended.
Both in Agios Georgios and in Paleokastritsa (Palaiokastritsa) there is a wide range of water sports as well as the possibility of renting a car or motorboats and motorcycles.
Our house Archontiko Kourkoulos is such an old manor house. With over 50 metres of facade length it has the largest courtyard of the village and lies in the middle of the old village main road. Vehicles rarely pass through here, as Makrades has a bypass road and keeps the modern noise out.
The manor house has been divided into several sections over the centuries and has been passed down to the present day, completely owned by the Kourkoulos family. The old classicistic door arch bears witness to this period as a uniform building. While one part is classically managed as a manor, even a modern oil press is operated here in winter for olive harvesting, another part has been extensively renovated and prepared as accommodation for tourism.
Finally, the renovated house housed a cobbler's workshop, a deposit for wine barrels and olive oil, as well as a dormitory for the last members of this branch of the family, Chrisanti (1907-1979) and Spiros Kourkoulos (1905-1972), who lived here permanently. Their four children Maria, Ivan, Georgios and Christos bequeathed the house to their children, so that it is now owned by Jörg Spiridon Kourkoulos, son of Georgios.
The house has been lovingly renovated to meet today's requirements without hiding its historical charm. Open wooden beams, niches in the walls, which were once old doors and windows, and the basic cut of the house are unchanged. Instead of wine barrels and a cobbler's workshop, a modern living/dining area with an open kitchen and comfortable upholstered seating area has now been created. In the living area there is a satellite TV with German and English programmes. The kitchen is equipped with oven, dishwasher and a separate drinking water tap. A large bathroom with shower is also available on the ground floor. On the 1st floor there are two bedrooms, generously equipped with 1.80 double bed and two single beds. An additional WC is also available on this floor. On the 2nd floor, the attic, in Greece "Sofitta", there are two more single beds in one room. Internet/WIFI is available throughout the house. Air conditioning with remote control is available on the ground floor and 2nd floor. The house also has central heating for the cold season and can therefore be used in the winter months. The house offers beds for 6 persons , as it has three bedrooms and is ideal for larger families.
On the ground floor there is a side exit that leads to the large terrace, barbecue area in the courtyard and the garden. The terrace is equipped with a large marble table and benches, as well as garden chairs and loungers. Upholstered cushions for the seating area are available in a chest. In the spacious barbecue area there is a barbecue with chimney extractor, a brick bread/pizza oven and electric outdoor hotplates under a protective canopy. An adjoining garden with a separate entrance door is currently privately cultivated with vegetables and is accessible.
In a small outbuilding on the terrace there is a washing machine (at a usage-dependent surcharge) as well as a clothes rack.
Three sunshades and bast mats are available for beach visits. Bath towels are for home use only, please bring your own beach towels when visiting the beach. In the living area there are a few board games (game collection, card games, etc. with German and English instructions) and a box of Legos.
The house has an own fenced parking lot on a property under shady olive trees (approx. 200 m of the house).
